Validate a Desktop Flow Before the First Live Run

Automation Reliability

Design-time checks catch some problems before execution, but they do not prove that a workflow will behave correctly with real inputs.

Resolve visible design issues first

Microsoft distinguishes design-time errors from errors encountered during a run. Inspect the designer’s warnings and errors before testing. A missing variable or invalid action configuration is easier to fix before live data and external side effects are involved.

Build a small sample set

Include a normal input, an empty optional field, an invalid required value and a temporary unavailable dependency. Use safe data and a suitable test destination. Write down the expected outcome for each case before running it so success is not defined only by the absence of an error message.

Inspect the destination

Check the actual file, row, task or message produced. Verify its content, ownership and links. A flow can complete while writing to the wrong table or sending a message to the wrong audience. Those are functional failures even if the run indicator is green.

Prepare a stop and fallback plan

Know how to pause the flow and who will handle incoming work manually. Document the current configuration and the evidence from your sample checks. Expand cautiously from a small pilot once the receiving users confirm that the output fits their work.

Working template

Pre-live check
Designer errors resolved
Test data separated from live records
Expected outcomes written down
Normal and invalid inputs exercised
Destination records inspected
Stop procedure and manual owner documented

Illustrative starting point. Adapt it to your inputs, permissions and review process.

Before you use it

  • Validation warnings are understood.
  • Test cases cover more than the happy path.
  • Destination data is correct.
  • A manual fallback exists.
